Tortilla Flats Bike Ride – Mesa, Arizona

Written by on February 5, 2011 in Mesa Bike Rides - 2 Comments

Tortilla Flats bike ride is a beautiful out and back ride in the Superstition Mountain range east of Mesa, Arizona that takes you past Canyon Lake. As you can see from the elevation profile below there is a fair bit of climbing.

This ride is best to do during late fall, winter and early spring. During the warmer months the road is packed with boaters heading to the lake. Best to get an early start to avoid the traffic if you plan to ride this route during late spring, summer and early fall.

The road is in good condition. There is not much of a shoulder on the road so be careful. One of the bridges that you go over is metal as long as you slow down you won’t have a problem.

You won’t be disappointed. This ride is extremely scenic. If you plan this ride during March and April the wildflowers will be in full bloom.

On your way back after the turn around make sure you stop at the Superstition Saloon to fuel up before you head back.

Potential Hazards: From late spring, summer and early fall the boating traffic is extremely dangerous, some tight turns on the descents, and a metal bridge that can be slick.

This was a great ride with lots of climbing and great scenery, especially the ride around Canyon Lake.   I only had time to go to Tortilla Flat (44 miles round trip) and my Garmin said I did 2500 feet of climbing, so I think the profile on this page is selling the ride a bit short.

Thanks Tyler for posting these rides – I wouldn’t have known to do this ride otherwise.  Looking forward to another ride next time I am in town.

Glad you liked it. The ride is one of my favorites this time of year when there is little boat traffic. Yes some times the evaluation on the site is not dead on but close. The visual tells the story.
